The Singing Bee

With not having much of an interest in any of the TV shows on this summer, NBCs The Singing Bee catched my eye and Josh and I decided to tune in and see what it was about.

The premise of the game show is to be able to be the final person out of 6 contestants who can sing the lyrics of any given song without getting the lyrics wrong. Seeing the commercials for the up and coming show, it looked really really funny and possibly something to keep our interest for a 1/2 hour time slot.

Tuning in last evening, Joey Fatone, many of you may recognize him from Dancing With the Stars or from N’Sync, is the host of the show. He starts the show off by selecting 6 contestants from the audiance and has them head to the stage, they will be the contestants of that evenings show.  After selecting the “lucky” 6, the show continues by Joey explaining that these 6 contestants will be narrowed down to 4 and then 2 and finally 1 person will remain who will be rewarded a trophy (yes an actual trophy is presented).

At this point I realize that I was mislead in what this show was about, I didn’t realize it was going to be a game show, I wasn’t sure what it was going to be, but didn’t realize it was game show related. I did continue to watch, but pretty much had lost interest at this point. The 6 contestants 1 at a time are instructed that they will be given the name and year of a song and that when the band and singers stop playing and singing they (the contestant) will be expected to sing the lyrics that follow correctly and that the first 4 people to do this will move on to the next round.

After a rather uneventful round the first four contestants who got the lyrics right moved on to the Final 4 round. Now I had expected something a little more entertaining and funny, afterall the previews had shown funny screw ups – these contestants were as dry as could be and either knew all the words (which didn’t make it very funny) or they screwed up by saying AND where there was no AND.

The Final 4 progresses into the Final 2 and finally you have the Singing Bee Champion who is awarded a trophy and then plays for that evenings Jackpot. How this is handled is the contestant will be played 7 songs and when the music and singing from the band stops the contestant is expected to sing the next line of the lyrics. Joey does not give the contestant the name or year of the song this round, it is up to the contestant to just know it. For every correct lyric the contestant receives $5000.00 and if the contestant can get 5 out of the 7 correct he/she will receive $50,000.00.

I am glad that I only wasted a 1/2 hour of my evening watching a show that looked to be so much funnier than what it turned out to be… the best part of the whole 1/2 hour was watching a little animated bumblebee hop along the bottom of the tv screen as the contestant sang the lyrics!

So THANKS NBC for the cute little bumblebee it was far more entertaining than the rest of the show.

I’m glad you saved me the pain of watching it myself. We had just seen the commercial for it on Monday and said it was something we had to watch. However, we thought it started next Tuesday. I’ll be sure not to tune in 🙂

Last night Josh and I watched “So You Think You Can Dance” & then watched “Don’t Forget The Lyrics” hosted by Wayne Brady, much much more entertaining then “The Singing Bee” – I did miss the bouncing bumblebee, but overall “Don’t Forget The Lyrics” was much better!
