One thing that Josh and I have realized that is when we try to explain the layout of our house it isn’t the easiest of all things to explain. For you see, our house isn’t a standard townhouse, it isn’t a standard row home, and while it is considered a carriage house, many have no idea what the heck that is and probably are thinking we live on someone else’s property in their carriage house, or that we live with the horses, neither of which is true!
Our house is a typical 3 floor house that we consider to be a townhouse, however, we do not live in a development and because of this we do not have any of those fees either. Being that we live on a standard street in Pottstown and do not live in a development sometimes our house is thought of as a row home. It doesn’t look like a row home, or at least not what I consider a row home to look like, but at times it is called a row home.
When the house was purchased it was listed as a carriage house. However, the word carriage house, like I said can be confusing because many do not know what a carriage house is and when looked up online, a carriage house is described and pictured as houses found on estates (like a guest house) or houses that look like old carriage houses.
A typical conversation when trying to describe our house is that the garage is on the lower level, however the lower level is not a basement because it is above ground. When entering from the garage you enter into an area that we use for Josh’s office and our family room. If you go up a flight of stairs you will pass our front door, and continue up a second set of stairs. Now on the main floor you will find the spare bedroom w/bathroom, a powder room, kitchen, and living room. Another set of stairs will take you to the 3rd level of our house where you will find 2 bedrooms (one of which is our newly painted master bedroom) and a bathroom, along with a loft area.
While my description of our house explains the layout of our house nicely, it does lack the emphasis on the fact that all the stairs are in the front of our house. When you enter by the front door you have the option to go downstairs (to the garage and lower level) or to go upstairs (to the kitchen, spare bedroom, etc.) you can continue up the stairs to the 3rd floor where our bedroom is.
Jokingly Josh and I started to say we live in a Layer Cake! While kinda silly, it does make sense. 1st layer – garage, family room, Josh’s office, 2nd layer – kitchen, spare bedroom, living room, 3rd layer – master bedroom, bathroom, futuristic nursery, and loft. So there we have it, we don’t live in a townhouse, a row home, or a carriage house, we live in a Three Layer Cake! Now we just have to figure out what kind of cake we are!!!!!

I think we live in an ice cream cake – because the bottom level is always so cold – like ice cream! Plus the middle floor is mostly brown like the chocolate ice cream cake stuff!

Hey – you forgot the dining room! It’s on the second floor too – the chocolate layer!

Maybe a wedding cake – a love layer, a kindness layer, an understanding layer. And with this type of cake you can continue to add layer after layer after layer.

It is amazing to me that you should find it difficult to establish what kind of cake you live in…….Be it an Ice Ceam Cake, Layer Cake, or a Wedding Cake, I believe the center is filled with “nuts”!
