The Jello Shot Incident of 2008

July 14, 2008 @ 7:02 pm ·

This year my parents decided to have a 5th of July party at their newly established house – the big house. While their have been a few parties at my parents house in the past, this was the first since they had moved back in ((that’s a completely different story – a long one at that)).

While my Mom didn’t really want us to bring anything except for picking up some beer on the way, we decided it would be fun to make and bring Jello finger shots. We should have just stuck with the beer…

Before starting to make the Jello Shots, I decided to thoroughly research this process, as I really wanted to add way more than the normal amount of vodka. It ends up that for a 6oz box of Jello mix, you only need 4oz’s of water and can add up to 18oz’s of vodka. Now that’s my kind of Jelly Shot! Woohoo!

So the process begins. I add approximately 6oz of boiling water to the Jello mix ((Giant brand Cherry Jello)) and, after mixing thoroughly, I added 18oz of vodka ((Three Olives Cherry Vodka)). So far everything is going perfectly… So far.

Now, for the record, Megan suggested that we should use a 13 inch by 9 inch dish for cooling, although me in one of my brilliant moments, decided to use a rather large cookie tray. Carefully I poured all of the liquid Jello goodness into the cookie tray with no spills what-so-ever. As I looked over at Megan with a cocky “Look, I could do it, I didn’t need your stupid big dish for the shots”, she says “Now how are you going to get it into the fridge?” Damn her – why is she always the smart one!

Now common sense would have said just pick up the cookie tray and pour it into the bigger dish, right? Do you think I did this? No, of course not… Stupid Josh.

Attempt #1
Trying to move the almost full cookie tray from the counter to the fridge I manage to spill a small amount of liquid red onto the floor and counter. Crap, now I need to clean this up.

Attempt #2
Again trying to move the almost full but a little less than before cookie tray into the fridge I stop almost immediately as it almost spills again. Nope, I’m not going to do that again.

Attempt #3
Ah – I have a plan. Let me pour some of the liquid red back into the measuring cup, move the cookie tray into the fridge and then pour the measuring cup’s content back into the cookie tray. That’s brilliant! I begin by removing about half of the liquid red from the cookie tray. Now, this would be great, except that half of the half poured on the floor and the counter. I decide not to stop and begin the journey to the fridge and I manage to turn the cookie tray so it fits onto the shelf and begin pushing it back. My arm hits something and now liquid red spills everywhere – on the shelf the cookie tray is on, next two shelves below, the two drawers below those shelves, most of the door and all the shelves contained within and finally all over the floor in front of the fridge. Did I mention I was brilliant?

Regardless, the final at most ¼ remaining liquid red was in the fridge. Success! It took Megan and I a little over an hour to clean everything. It was nightmare, liquid red everywhere. Just think, all Megan needed to do was tell me to use the bigger 13 inch by 9 inch dish and all of this would have not happened. Jeez. 😛

In the end, the Jello Shots we did end up bringing were really good. A little too strong for some, but Megan and I, plus my parents, loved them. I think most of the people at the party enjoyed them too, although who knows – they could have just been trying to shut me up so I’d move on to the next victim person.

Megan and I plan on bringing Jello Shots again next year, although this time I’ll listen to Megan and use the bigger dish! :vodka:

Even my little cousin commented how you should always listen to the female! Looking back it was a funny experience, just hopefully next time we make them we won’t have to clean the entire fridge and kitchen!

I have a perfect solution – when I make them I visit a party store and purchase little plastic cups (like the ones you sometimes get in a resturant with condiments in them). The ones I get even have lids! They’re perfect!

Michelle that is a great idea, so great in fact, that is exactly what Josh’s Mom Terri does! We weren’t making the typical “jello shots” though. We were making Jello Finger Shots! 🙂 The cups wouldn’t work that great for jello fingers!

    First of all…. let’s re-phase….”my parents decided to have”…. to……
Josh said, “We’re having a party at your house, Mom.” We (Dad and I) LOVED having everyone at the house (big house) again. It seened like no time had passed. To those who don’t know… there was a “big house”, a “really really small house”, and a “medium house with major stairs”, and then the “big house” again… all at the same time! But, like Josh said, that’s a whole other story. Thanks Josh for having the party! We needed it! Mom
Jello Fingers have been requested for July 2009!
Psssss….Josh, what if I told you there might be a “middle house” soon!
(I know Noth-Thing!) Ask me no questions and I tell you no lies.
And Josh thinks, “Oh, Shxx, what the hxxx is she talking about?!” 🙂
